Christian Rathbone (Thinker)

Each piece is carried out entirely by hand, without the use of chemicals, treatments, or synthetics of any kind. Production of all carpets takes place in Turkey. The primary materials used are sheep's wool and vegetable (composed of vegetation) dyes native to the region. Wool is sheared twice a year in a humane manner, on sheep that are used for their wool, not for slaughter. After being hand-spun, the wool is then dyed in small batches of about 40 kilos, by hand. Sun dried wool is prepared for the weavers. They then weave and knot each piece by hand. After, finished pieces are washed and stretched. This is to ensure that all excess dyes are removed, and that the carpets are pre-shrunk. They require no special care, as they can be completely saturated with water without any damage. I work with about 100 weavers. For my standard sizes, the women weave on looms located in their homes. Larger sizes are made on bigger looms within the village. The weaving process alone takes 2-3 months and our capacity is limited to about 160 pieces a year. The methods employed date back many centuries.

Christian Rathbone, Inc. is a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council. It is in this partnership that we are working to eventually create sustainability guidelines for
the hand made, naturally dyed carpet industry. Reasons for creating a product that works with the environment and not against it are becoming painfully obvious. This speaks
to the awareness that we are all interconnected in a real way and that there are things more important than producing a product with regard to cost and little else.
Wool and dyestuffs come either from Turkey, where the rugs are made, or the surrounding region. Ingredients used for dyes are derived from various vegetation sources
and include things like pomegranate, oak, walnut, madder root, indigo and chamomile. These methods come from an age where there was no such thing as chemical dyes.
Methods used are completely traditional, resulting in a "modern oriental". Just like their older counterparts, my rugs have a lifespan of 50-70+ years, depending on use.
Keeping things simple (wool and vegetable dyes) allows me to offer a sustainable product on the production side, as well as the consumer side.
More and more sustainable products are becoming available thereby offering us all a choice. I hope that in combining graphic design with ancient tradition, the choice of your
next carpet is an easy one.
